My Gear

I’ve been using Sony/ Minolta Camera bodies and lenses since 2008.  This is a list of my current gear:

Starting with my current DSLR, the Sony 16mp A580:Sony A580

A really nifty weatherproof neoprene protector for my camera/ lens.  My field lens combo of Sigma 15mm, Sony 16-80mm and Minolta 135mm all fit in this case when mounted on the A580.  Bought it at B&H photo.

My main point and shoot that has been faithful to me for the past 3 years, the Canon G9:

The tripod that holds up my Camera, the Gitzo 1541T carbon-fibre and Gitzo series 1 ballhead.  Lightweight and very compact it’s the perfect rig for stashing on the side of my backpack.

And now for lenses starting at the widest angle:

The Sigma 15mm F2.8 diagonal fisheye. Lightweight and compact, it’s easy to take with me on all kinds of hikes.  Very sharp and makes a great wide-angle landscape lens.

The Sony/ Zeiss 16-80mm F3.5-4.5.  My main lens that takes some 90% of my photos.  Great lens.

The Sigma 24mm F2.8.  Got this one cheap on Ebay and is actually called a macro lens.  It is nice for close-ups with lots of DOF and also a nice landscape lens.  I don’t use this one very much anymore.

Sony 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G SSM lens.  Oh the silent AF and smooooth bokeh!  I don’t backpack much with it due to it’s size and weight but it is a sweet sweet lens.

Minolta 100mm F2.8.  A really nice macro lens, great for flower shots or anything else you want to get up close and personal with.

The Minolta 135mm F2.8.  I got this lens as a compact/ lightweight short tele lens for dayhikes and backpacking.  Weighs less than a pound and is super sharp.

For my lenses when out in the field I use Lowepro padded lens cases which can be secured on the hipbelt of my packs.  In addition to the velco secure straps on the lens cases I also use an aluminum carabiner to make sure my lens and case doesn’t disappear.

For filters my main CP filter is a 62mm Hoya HD which is resistant to scratches and performs very well.  I also have a few B+W 62mm UV filters that I use either on the 16-80 or the 70-300 if there is risk of water or other debris getting on the front element.

For macro work I also have a couple of 12″ light disks (silver white and gold) to help illuminate my subjects.  I try to use natural light whenever possible.

I also have a bunch of other stuff like Cokin filters etc but the above list is what I use for 99% of my photoshoots.

For software I use:

-Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3x for most of my workflow as it is simply and amazing piece of software.

-Corel Paintshop Pro 12 for additional image editing.

-Autopano Pro and Arcsoft Panomaker 5 for panoramic stitching.
